Stopping Dogs Peeing Inappropriately

Dogs will naturally have great respect for their owner. For them, the bond can feel incredibly strong, and they can easily get over-excited when we return home to them. This heightened level of excitement can have unwanted symptoms however, leaving us with an embarassing problem to fix…

What can we do to stop our dog peeing in the house?

When returning home, it is important that you ignore your dog until he is in a relaxed state of mind.If you show excitement to your dog as you enter the house, they may well match your excitment until they are literally unable to contain themselves!

Occasionally dogs begin urinating around the home because nobody has taught them otherwise. You have to show your dog where you would like him to go to the toilet.

You can try this method while out walking with your dog, or back home in your garden if it suits you better.

Choose a word which your dog can learn to associate with peeing (it can be any word at all – it needn’t be embarrassing!)

Take your dog outside the house.

When he looks like he is going to pee, say the word you’ve chosen for ‘peeing’.

Keep repeating this routine until your dog starts to associate this word with the act of peeing.

When you next see him attempt to pee inside the house, give him a firm ‘No’, then quickly take him to the chosen area, and say the word you’ve chosen for ‘peeing’.

Remember to praise your dog enthusiastically if he does as you have asked.

You’ll need to be patient – it won’t happen overnight. With time though, your dog should learn to go in the dedicated area – particularly if you continue to give heaps of praise when he gets it right. This technique, often referred to as ‘operant conditioning’, can be extremely effective if followed consistently.

Sometimes dog begin ‘marking territory’ by urinating on furniture and flooring as a means of elevating their position in the pack.Re-enforce your position as the dominant pack member, and show your dog clearly where he is and isn’t allowed to go.Repeat your obedience training with him, and teach him that he is no longer allowed to jump up on the furniture.Your dog will be reassured that you are in control when you show your dominance, and his attempts to improve his rank in the pack by peeing in the house should cease.

Man oh man the amount of dog pee that I have had over the years! I’ve had so many puppies and it seems to me that it can take between six months to one full year, depending on the dog, to totally train the dog.

Then when a dog gets old they just can’t help it. Goodarticle with good tips.
